Dia's Upsherin
Dia, daughter of Dorit Kosmin and Rabbi Kliel Rose, rabbi of West End Synagogue (Nashville's conservative congregation), receives her first hair cut on Lag B'Omer. This tradition, called an upsherin, marks a child's entry into the formal educational system and the commencement of Torah study. So that Torah should be "sweet on the tongue," the Hebrew letters are covered with honey, and the children lick them as they read.
